Surface Tension or Faith?

While in Senior Secondary School 1, we were taught Surface Tension and I never forgot the concept even if I had wanted to, because our teacher made sure we had a debate on Surface Tension and Faith, using the story in Mathew.14:28-30.

I might not have remembered much of all that was said in the debate, but I knew how much we were so eager to listen to the participants.

Do you know what surface tension is? Did you love the topic when you came across it?

Of course, that became one of my very best topics, except for the calculation🤦🏽‍♀️.

Surface tension is the tendency of a liquid surface to act like it were a stretched elastic skin. This occurrence can be observed in water.

There are times when you keep water for some time and you go back to carefully observe the top of the water, you will observe that surface tension has occurred -the water has behaved like it was an elastic skin that could be stretched.

At that point, if you place a needle or a razor blade on the 'supposed elastic skin', it will float and not sink.

But if the skin were broken just a little, the object placed on it would sink.

If you have ever wondered why a needle would float in water and still sink at another time, it would interest you to know that surface tension was behind it.

But in Mathew 14:25, do you think surface tension occurred? I mean, look at the definition of surface tension, maybe at the time Jesus walked on the water, the water behaved like a stretched elastic skin, and Jesus could float?

While in Mathew 14:30, Peter's fear broke the skin and he sank? Does fear break surface tension, then?

Do you think Jesus and Peter walking on water, was surface tension -one of the laws of Physics?

Okay, if you think it was, let's try to do this together; Keep water in a big bowl, that you could enter, for a long time (you can leave it open and even keep it overnight -do not allow dirt to enter inside though). After you observed that the water has behaved like a stretched elastic skin, dip your legs inside and see if you can float.

**

Even though surface tension in many ways can be likened to Faith, it is not Faith.

When the water is disturbed, surface tension can not happen. So it is with Faith, when your heart is troubled, faith is displaced and fear sets in.

If you say what happened was surface tension, are you able to float then?

Or you can try it out in a sea, too (Don't go that far please).

This story is a practical way to explain Surface tension, but it is not surface tension. Why?

Because the law of surface tension can not hold on a large object. The law is weak when it comes to an object with a much weight. How could it now be the reason for Jesus walking on the sea?

And Peter Floating, but ended up sinking.

No law of science can ever fully describe Faith.

This story is to help each of us build our faith in God.

LESSONS FROM THE STORY

1) Put your confidence in Jesus, for He only is the original and not a Fake.

2) Do not be disturbed by the storm, keep looking ahead unto Jesus (for He will not allow the storm to sink you).

3) Without Faith, it is impossible to please God.

4) Jesus is above all laws of Science. If you don't believe, You can try to compare!

As you go through this week and beyond;

Choose Faith over Fear.

Choose Worship over Worry.
